New to Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) role Training

Target Audience: For DSLs new to role or for those wanting a refresher after an absence from the role.

Course Content: 
This course is for newly appointed, Early Years Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads, and appropriate members of the setting’s safeguarding teams to develop an understanding of their role in taking the lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection.

  • Understand the DSL role in the senior leadership of a setting
  • Re visit statutory and good practice guidance
  • Explore Early Years, Solihull SSCP toolkit and NSPCC resources which will support this role
  • Awareness of the DSL training requirements of Annex C
    Training for the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) should take account of any advice from the local safeguarding partners or local authority on appropriate training courses. In addition to the areas set out in paragraph 2, training for the DSL must cover the elements listed below:

    • How to build a safe organisational culture.
    • How to ensure safe recruitment.
    • How to develop and implement safeguarding policies and procedures.
    • If applicable, how to support and work with other practitioners to safeguard children.
    • Local child protection procedures and how to liaise with local statutory children’s services agencies and with the local safeguarding partners to safeguard children.
    • How to refer and escalate concerns (including as described at paragraph 3.9 of the EYFS).
    • How to manage and monitor allegations of abuse against other staff.
    • How to ensure internet safety

Important Note: Due to the condensed nature of this session, some topics may require additional reading, reflection, or follow-up actions after the course to ensure full understanding and compliance.
