Oral health promotion video for parents and carers of reception-aged children
One in four five-year-olds are experiencing dental decay in England. This can result in problems with eating and speaking, pain, infections, and time off school.
Solihull special care dental service has put together a short video for parents and carers about looking after their reception-aged children’s teeth. Please can you send this video link out to all parents and carers that have children in reception.

Healthy child programme service (0-19 years) feedback survey
Solihull Council’s children’s public health team is currently re-procuring the healthy child programme service (0-19 years) that consists of school nursing, health visiting, infant feeding and the family nurse partnership (for adolescent parents). As part of this re-procurement for the new contract beginning March 2025, we are gathering feedback from service partners and service users. Please fill in the short service partner online survey and share the service user survey with families.

Attendance and safeguarding
There is a strong connection between children’s attendance and vigilance around safeguarding. Early Years inspectors will explore how providers work with parents to promote children’s attendance so that children form good habits for future learning. Ofsted inspectors will especially explore how early years pupil premium children are supported to attend. Recent Ofsted inspector training also highlighted the need for conversations about the need to explore the attendance of SEND pupils and any links between children’s attendance and safeguarding concerns.
We periodically update our Ofsted evaluation summaries to highlight actions recommended during inspection such as
- ensure you maintain an accurate record of the times and days children attend
- ensure that all information and records, including those with regard to child protection matters, are clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed to promote children’s safety
- maintain a daily record of the names of the children being cared for on the premises and their hours of attendance

Yesterday evening I attended the Froebel Autumn lecture -Time for Children. The event launched the slow pedagogy pamphlet. This is about listening to children and giving time to deep learning. Many settings have reviewed their routines to ensure that learning opportunities are noticed and used to develop children’s interests, knowledge, skills and understanding. {It was a recorded event so it will be available on the Froebel website]
