Becoming an Early Years Provider in Solihull

Most early years providers caring for children under the age of five for more than two hours a day must register with Ofsted.

Some types of childcare are exempt from registration or may register on a voluntary basis. Providers should always check Ofsted guidance carefully before applying.

Early years provision includes a range of provider types, including:

• Childminders (domestic and non-domestic premises)
• Group and school-based providers
• Out-of-school and holiday provision
• Nannies and home carers

Registration requirements vary depending on the type of provision and where care is delivered. The tabs on this page provide more information for each provider type.

The Ofsted registration process involves several stages, including:

• deciding whether registration is required
• understanding which register applies
• preparing policies, procedures and arrangements
• submitting an application
• completing suitability checks
• attending a registration visit

Providers should ensure they are fully prepared before submitting an application.

Following a registration visit, Ofsted will either:

• grant registration, or
• issue a Notice of Intention to Refuse Registration

A Notice of Intention to Refuse is not a final decision. It explains the reasons for the decision and sets out the applicant’s right to object or appeal.

Early years advisers can provide guidance to support providers through the registration process.

Support may include:

• clarifying registration requirements
• discussing readiness to apply
• signposting to relevant guidance
• answering general questions about the process

Advisers cannot complete applications on behalf of providers or guarantee registration.
