Planned internet service upgrade – Sunday 22 November 2015

November 6, 2015

There will be no internet access to and from Solgrid between 09:00 and 12:00.  There will be intermittent connectivity between 12:00  and  17:00.

What is being done?

  • The existing router is five years old and is being refreshed as part of our routine maintenance programme.  While this is being done there will be no connectivity.
  • The internet service has two links.  The first is the usual connection and the second is there in case the first one stops working. This second link is being upgraded to provide greater bandwidth should it be needed. To test the spare link the first link will be disconnected. During this testing there may be a breaks in service of between 10 and 30 minutes between 12:00 and 17:00.

What will the impact be?

On Sunday users in school will not be able to access the internet. Users at home will not be able to remotely access school systems, the extranet https://extranet.solgrid.org.uk or the intranet http://www.solihull.int . Office 365 provided by EICTS will still work but emails sent or received during a break in service will be delayed before arriving at their destination.

Why was Sunday chosen?

The connectivity loss will affect schools, libraries and other public places which use SMBC connectivity. To minimise disruption Sunday was chosen since most of these sites are closed on Sunday. We apologise to remote access users who will lose connectivity for periods on Sunday.

How will you know it has been completed?

We will be posting major updates here on https://www.solgrid.org.uk.  We will also be tweeting progress, using our @SolgridITNews account.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
