Allocation of time to RE

As with other subjects, there are no regulations regarding the time to be allocated to RE. Schools are expected to allocate sufficient time to enable pupils to follow a meaningful and coherent course in fulfilment of the provision of the agreed syllabus. SACRE recommends a minimum of 5% of curriculum time as an aggregate over each Key stage, which is generally accepted practice.

This may be planned:

  • as a separate “subject” allocated as a weekly sessions, or offered as a series of more intense ‘modules’ for short periods during the year;
  • as a distinct element within an ‘integrated’ or ‘thematic’ scheme of work;
  • in the form of ‘study days’ or ‘half days’ to complement the above.

The study of religions and explorations of issues concerned with life’s ultimate meaning and value will also arise naturally within all curriculum area e.g. English literature, drama, art, history, geography.
